I’m a Canadian photographer. I’ve been in Japan since 1995. I began my photography journey in 2000 when I took a course at Alberta College of Art and Design. One of the challenges and joys of photography is that it’s continually evolving and a continual learning process.
I enjoy portraits because I like meeting people and collaborating to create something. The ideal portrait shows reveals something about the subject but also develops a connection between the subject and the viewer. My goal in portraiture is to connect with the people I photograph so they feel comfortable in front of the camera. When possible, I prefer to have the sitter in a familiar location, surrounded by familiar objects and use natural light. But I also love shooting in the studio and on location.
Some people ask me, “What’s the best camera?”
My answer? The one you have in your hand and know how to get the most out of it.
